Tuesday Agape Lunch at Jesse Remington

Tuesdays at JRHS are special – The Agape Lunch! Created in the winter of 2008-2009, the Agape Lunch is a new way for us to meet the first part of our mission statement: Christian Community.

Selected Tuesdays, a small team of students, parents, staff and volunteers make a lunch for the student body and several guests from the staff, parent base and community. At JRHS we are working to build a unique community that will create some positive results in the lives of our students. This community is marked by trust, accountability, respect, serving, God-honoring, quality relationships, and fellowship. The Tuesday Agape Lunch creates the opportunity to meet and surpass this goal.

Agape is a Greek word meaning “love”. Jesus taught an Agape love to his disciples, meaning that in their service of one another, they could expect positive growth as an outcome. By giving, we can create change in our own lives.

The cinema offers several examples of this life-changing experience, but possibly the finest example is the 2007 film, “Facing the Giants” where the coaches, players, parents and school officials experienced changed lives after they re-committed to the primacy of Christ in their lives. By learning to love like Christ, they gained immeasurably.

In John 13-15, Jesus is talking with his disciples, and likely centered around a meal. He gives his disciples a new command, to “love one another” and that by demonstrating love, they would be proving that they are disciples of Christ. Then, in verse 15, Jesus tells them the importance of obedience to his commands, and that this Agape love is going to require sacrifice. The greatest love, Jesus teaches them, is seen by one who is willing to lay down his life for his friends. As we see from these verses, Jesus formed a community where his followers could learn and experience Agape Love, and therefore change and grow.
