War: Its tough, but not hopeless
The following article was written upon reading the article “Hard Is Not Hopeless” article from the “World Magazine” February 3, 2007 edition
Today tough decisions are being made on the present war on terror. The Democratic leaders in U.S. Congress, and President George W. Bush have been butting heads on whether or not we should send in the 22,000 soldiers of this so called “surge”. The message that World Magazine’s February 3, 2007 edition, as well as Bush would like to portray is that “hard is not hopeless”.
All parties have openly admitted that mistakes have been made, and as Bush has said “this is not the fight we entered in Iraq, but it is the fight we’re in”(World Magazine, 23). With the presidential elections coming up, it is important that we keep this issue in the forefront of our mind.
Every presidential candidate has been forced to take a position on this issue. The majority of the democratic would argue that this surge is a bad idea. One candidate, John McCain, has made it clear that he is for the surge. He says that it is America’s obligation to finish what it has started.
The enemy that the world faces in this fight is according to most parties, spiteful, barbaric, and extremely guile. The current commander of American forces in Iraq, Lt. General David Petraeus said “We face a determined, adaptable, barbaric enemy… In fact, any such endeavor is a test of wills and there are no guarantees“(World Magazine, 24). If we give up and allow this enemy space, they will continue to grow until there is no power left to stop them.
